“What If My Kids Don’t Want My Stuff?”

How to Navigate a Common and Emotional Part of Downsizing

You have lovingly cared for your belongings over the years.  Your furniture, dishes, heirlooms, collections. Each item tells a story, holding the memories of decades past. So when it comes time to downsize and your children say, “I don’t have room for that,” or “I don’t want it,” it can be deeply emotional.  Even some times painful.

First, Know This: You’re Not Alone

This is one of the most common concerns I hear from clients. And while it can feel personal, try not to take it that way. Many adult children today live in smaller homes or apartments, lead more minimalist lifestyles, or simply have different tastes. Their choices aren’t rejections of your history.  They are reflections of their own lives and realities.

So, What Can You Do?

Downsizing doesn’t mean forgetting. It’s an opportunity to curate the most meaningful parts of your life and pass them on in new ways. Here are some thoughtful, practical steps you can take:

📸 1. Preserve the Story

Before letting go of items with sentimental value, take photos of them. Pair them with written memories. How you acquired them, why they mattered, what moments they were part of. This helps you (and your loved ones) keep the stories, even if the physical objects move on.

🛍️ 2. Sell What Still Has Value

Consignment shops, online marketplaces, or estate sale professionals can help you find a new home for your items. You might even enlist a family member to help with the process. They may not want the piece, but they might enjoy helping you find someone who does.

🎁 3. Donate with Purpose

Many local charities, shelters, schools, and churches welcome gently used items. Knowing that your belongings are going to someone who truly needs them can be deeply comforting. Here are a few in the Westchester County area.

💡 4. Keep What Truly Serves You

If an item brings you joy or has a clear purpose in your next chapter, it’s worth holding on to. Try to release the guilt of keeping something “just in case.” Instead, choose what supports the life you want to live now.
