1. Start Early
Downsizing takes more time than you might expect. Begin at least 2-3 months before your planned move to stay ahead.
2. Make a Plan
Break the process into clear steps. A detailed plan will make everything feel more manageable and reduce stress.
3. Set a Timeline
Include a timeline in your plan to keep track of tasks. If you’re moving far, you may need more time to prepare.
4. Use Your New Floor Plan
A simple floor plan of your new home helps you decide where items will go and what may not fit.
5. Start with “Less”
When deciding what to keep, focus on items that are less used, less valuable, or less sentimental.
6. Discard Duplicates
Do you really need five whisks? Downsizing is the perfect time to get rid of duplicate items.
7. Apply the “One-Year” Rule
If you haven’t used or looked at something in the past year, it’s probably time to leave it behind.
8. Sort with “Yes” or “No”
Use sticky notes to label items as “yes” (to keep) or “no” (to leave behind). This simple system helps you stay organized.
9. Donate or Discard
For the “no” items, decide which can be donated to others and which should be thrown away or recycled.
10. Ask for Help
Friends and family can provide extra hands and valuable advice. Involve them early to make the process smoother.
